Allow me to be the first to introduce myself, your teacher and, hopefully, journalism mentor, Mr. William Vega.

I am the former sports editor of The Prospector at UTEP and a long-term intern with KVIA. My background with the media expands past newspaper and television as a former volunteer with KTEP and an online contributor to Miner Rush, a regional partner of SB Nation, which covers UTEP athletics.

I currently write for The El Paso Times, covering high school football as a stringer and I used to freelance report for the times during the summer of 2013, when I reviewed concerts and featured local music acts.

Over the past two years, I was the journalism and photojournalism teacher at Coronado High School, while coaching vegafreshmen girls' basketball. This is my third year teaching after receiving a bachelor's in multimedia journalism at UTEP May 2012.

As for the class, which you will soon learn, it will be taught at a college level with plenty of lectures and independent note-taking. At the same time, the hands-on experience is the only way to truly learn the trait and starting from day one, students will be assigned stories/photo assignments.

One of the key aspects of journalism is learning what it means to be a journalist. After working with the media, personally, my view on life changed as I took a more cautious, professional and critical glimpse on events surrounding me. I hope my students will take that away from me, more than anything else, whether they choose to become a journalist or not.

Journalism means more than becoming a good writer/photographer as it carries a certain type of demeanor with the name of being a journalist/photojournalist. This is the difference between my class and any other journalism class anyone may ever take as students learn how to walk the walk and talk the talk.

So, once again, welcome to a new year and most importantly, a new chapter in your life.
