History conscious Bowie High School is located in the south side of El Paso, TX and is one of the oldest schools in the area. It began as an elementary school in 1922, was turned into a high school in 1928,and saw its first graduating class in 1933. Bowie's expansion was completed in 1941, and at that time, it became the largest High School in the city with 1327 students.
The historic Chamizal Treaty was signed by presidents Lyndon Johnson (US) and Adolfo Lopez Mateos (Mexico) on the Bowie Campus on September 25, 1964 and after a six million dollar bond issue was approved, the present Bowie High School was built on 65 acres of land, the Rio Grande's Cordoba Island, formerly Mexico.
Bowie's involvement with our nation's history exhudes patriotism - it has proudly lost teachers, students and alumni to all major armed conflicts our nation has been involved in. Bowie alumni form one of the largest and most cohesive groups of high school alumni in both the state of Texas and in California.
